Michael Jackson suffered a heart attack in Los Angeles about an hour and a half ago. He's been taken to the hospital, and his mom is on the way to see him.

The report is he has died.

And maybe he is well out of it. It must be dreadful to have everything, then to have your world come crashing down around your ears.

"No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friend's or of thine own were: any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bells tolls; it tolls for thee." (John Donne, Meditation XVII)

Sleep well, Mr. Jackson

A sad event.

And that seems appropriate.

He was a very weird and funny--and sad--person.

Never speak ill of the dead Gator.

I saw MJ live at Wembley 20 years ago. He was quite a performer and a brilliant songwriter imo.

Shame all the controversy got in the way. It's sad that he will probably be remembered more for that than for his talent, which was immense.

May he rest in peace.

My take on Michael Jackson is that he was a child inside an adult body, and had a child's philosophy on life. When he had "other boys" for sleepovers, it was no different to sleepovers between two young friends. Mentally, Michael Jackson did not see himself as any different to the boy. If they did look at porn, it was no different to two kids snickering over boob pics.

When I said I didn't believe the allegations against him, I was asked if I'd be comfortable having Michael Jackson babysit my kids. I answered no because it would be the same as asking an 11 yr old to babysit another 11 yr old. Many people condemned him because he didn't fit into any of the normal packages, and they did not understand him. He was different, odd, strange, so they assumed he must be evil.

On the other hand, Michael Jackson was a musical genius, and he was an inspiration to the world. He devoted time and money to making the world a better place. He didn't just sing about healing the world, he played his part in trying to make it happen. For that I salute him.

There will always be those who try to knock him down, whether through jealousy, ignorance, prejudice or paranoia, but his music speaks for him, and his legacy will live on.

Heal the World.
Make it a better place
For you and for me
And the entire Human race.

Rest in peace, Michael.

The guy was a certified loony. It was as weird as they come. He paid off a kid to shut up but there were serious allegations of child molestations.

Let me tell you the real thing that upsets me about his death. It is dominating the news today and will for the next few days. It is even a bigger story than the Governor of South Carolina getting his Argentine Poon Tang.

Today Congress is debating an Environmental Wacko payback bill that will be a disaster for this country. The cost of everything will go up, especially power, and it needs to be debated and the American people need to know the ramifications. Instead all the American people will be hearing about is Michael Jackson.

Undoubtedly, but perhaps that was why he was so talented and successful?

Many outstanding talents are "weirdos."

And who wants to be "normal" anyway? Normal is boring, average.

That is the thing though isn't it.

For me, that is the only piece of evidence that gives any credence to the child abuse allegations.

Why would you give someone a multi-million dollar pay off to settle an allegation of which you were innocent, when the act of settling would appear to be an admission of guilt?

But then, as has been noted, he was "as weird as they come", and who can second guess that?

I would suggest fear. This kind of allegation must be soul destroying for anyone, and maybe worse for someone who is still a child at heart and unable to cope with many everyday normalities. I would imagine that given a choice between being publicly dragged through the court system with no idea what the outcome might be or paying for the whole thng to just "go away", if we were financially able, many of us would choose the latter. Of course, it didn't go away because Michael Jackson was too famous for the media to let it be. I doubt that he fully considered the implications, but fear often leads to irrationality. I understand that, at the time, Michael Jackson had around 13 billion dollars to his name, so paying out a few million would not seem such a large amount to him. Then you have the problem that, once you've paid out, you get others wanting a slice of the action. Thankfully, Michael Jackson seems to have been better advised in later years.

I wonder if either of those boys could actually read what the sign says. I doubt that either of them wrote it.

I also wonder if they both survived the hostilities in Iraq.

Most likely written before Michael Jackson's acquital, and a very inappropriate response to his death.

I must be like a little girl then because Eurosilly people like you make me giggle all the time.

Shouldn't you be reading homoerotic passages in “Ulysses” instead of posting on the internet? Are you bored today or something?

I read Ulysses because they made me do it in college. You read it because you liked it. Don't go bitching to me about it.

It was one of your fellow countryman who eulogized "Ulysses" on the board first and you who brought it up again.

There really AREN'T any homoerotic passages in ULYSSES, IIRC--just a few stray references to the topic.

Although in the sixteenth chapter ("Eumaeus"), some critics have suggested that Joyce introduces a slight homoerotic element into the story of Leopold Bloom befriending Stephen Daedalus and helping to sober him up and get him home safely.

But then, academics see so many unusual things in literary works, you wonder if someone put LSD in their water supply.

... though it's more likely that Bloom sees Stephen as a substitute for his lost son, Rudi, yes ? ....

Thanks for that, JP.

Curse me for an arrant knave, but I really doubt whether Gator's read "Ulysses" at all.

I read the stupid book 39 years ago because my college professor made me do it. It would not have been my first choice.

It did not impress me very much because I haven't thought about it at all over the years until I saw the extensive discussion about it on FB.

Back in my college days I was much more interested in engineering topics.

It is good to know that James Joyce has such a loyal following on FB. Rolling Eyes For some reason it doesn't surprise me.
