Watching you, watching me..on tv
In the book 1984, Winston Smith's videoscreen, which could never be turned off, was as likely to be watching him as he was to be watching it. It's inconceivable that such a thing could come to pass in the real world. In order to do it, you would need to get people to accept, and initially buy, televisions with cameras in them. Nobody is going to buy a TV they know will be watching them. It would be far too expensive to give them away, and many would refuse them anyway or just not plug them in. No, you need people to actually want to have that TV with a camera installed in their houses. You need to make it an attractive thing, a fashionable thing, a normal thing to have. I went to dinner the other day, with an old crony from my college days. He proudly explained that he was a member of the organisation that collects viewing figures, and he had a small device on his TV into which he had to declare who was present and watching. His TV was on all evening, with the sound turned down - and very distracting it was, too. So the "viewing figures" will be distorted by the avid pensioners enjoying BBC 1 while they ate their dinner in another room. Just goes to show. People will put up with anything if it has cachet, or pays a little. How about "Have one of the all-new High Definition Camera and smoke- detector-enabled TVs in your home, and you will be exempted from the annual licence fee! That ought to work .....
