UK to lead the world in pointless expenditure for no gain.
Britain is to set the pace in carbon capture and storage. We are to lead the world in pointless expenditure for no gain. This is a very small country. Our industrial activity has been almost completely stopped. Our agriculture is cut to the bone. All we are now is a storage area for other countries' excess population. That's it. Go on, admit it. There's really nothing else here. Yet we are to set up CCS (wait a minute, I have a record by them...'The Band Played Boogie', wasn't it?) even though it will add 30 to 50 percent in capital costs to any new power plant using it, and 15 percent to running costs. Meanwhile, power output will be cut by 10-30 percent. Well, that's a really cheap power source, isn't it? It's going to make Mexican-wave-power look commercially viable. India, meanwhile, have come to their senses and said they are having nothing to do with all this nonsense. China is going to laugh at the idea. The US have already said they will not play along. All those countries are far, far bigger than us. Germany has voiced an interest but they're going to let us destroy our economy completely without denting theirs. The shortlist of companies who will be involved in this are BP, EON UK, Peel Power and Scottish Power. The EU wants twelve full-size pilot plants running by 2015. Will they all be in the UK? Will only the UK pay for this? I don't mean in commercial terms, I mean in end-user terms. 30-50% extra capital. 15% extra running costs. 10-30% reduced output. That adds up to one massive hike in our power bills. On top of all the rest of the monthly cash-drains coming out of our pockets now. And guess what? Nobody else is going to do it. Only the UK will 'benefit' from fantasy-level inflation in energy prices while the rest of the world sniggers behind their hands. Only in the UK will the people huddle around one-bar electric fires, on for an hour a night, while our politicians delight in making 0.00000001% difference to global emissions (incidentally, they'll have the gas central heating on full in their houses.
