The NASUWT says it is UNFAIR to treat teachers who have affairs with students who are over 16 as sex offenders, insisting all they are guilty of is an “error of professional judgement”. .. In 2001 it became illegal for teachers to have any intimate or sexual affair with any pupil in their school under 18. If found guilty of doing so, the teacher would face instant dismissal, be made to sign the sex offenders register and possibly face jail. But NASUWT general secretary Chris Keates told the Tonight show it’s wrong to criminalise these teachers. She said: “This isn’t a person who is showing any tendencies for being a sex offender—this is a person who’s made a serious error of professional judgement. “I don’t think they need to be criminalised by being put on a sex offenders register.” “There is a real anomaly in the law that we are concerned about,” she added. “If a teacher has a relationship with a pupil at the school at which they teach — it could be an 18-year-old pupil in the sixth form — then that teacher can be prosecuted and can end up on the sex offenders register. “It does seem a step too far — when there has been a consensual relationship — to put that person on a sex offenders register when, in fact, they could have a perfectly legitimate relationship with an 18- year-old still enrolled at another school.” Dean’s relationship with his teacher, who was 22 at the time, began when he was given a mobile phone by her for doing well in class. It had one number on it—her own—and her texts quickly turned sexual. She arranged intimate meetings between lessons, swearing Dean to secrecy. But after 18 months the strain got too much and he exposed the relationship. Prentice received a suspended sentence and was made to sign the sex offenders register. But they do, D-N. And a female teacher not a million miles from here is on the Sex Offenders Register for just this "crime".

Call me sexist, TJ, but I don't hink most boys would feel they had been ravished under these circumstances, as D-N says. I think they complain when their boastings reach the ears of someone in authority. Call me old-fashioned, but I think if a schoolmaster takes advantage of his pupils (of either sex) that is something else. Call me an illogical old fogey ... and I will probably agree with you! :wink:

What it boils down to is a teacher teaching sexual impropriety. imo.

personally i support the move - i'd be quite happy to see such a teacher dismissed, but i fail to see why a teacher should be convicted of a criminal offoce and then go on the Sex Offenders Register for sleeping with 17 year old pupil 'A' but do nothing wrong if he sleeps with her twin sister who's a trainee hairdresser.... i've no idea what the fcuk its got to do with 'man rights' either, or indeed Canada - coz its a British Trade Union, the NAS/UWT, pushing against the law in Britain that makes no distinction whatsoever between male and female teachers. but hey, lets not let that get in the way of a foaming rant....
