Remember
This is my first Remembrance weekend since returning from Afghanistan. I shall be remembering those who served and are still serving. I hope everyone is able to take at least one minute to pay a silent tribute. They shall not grow old As we that are left grow old. Age shall not weary them, Nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun And in the morning, We will remember them.

I hope everyone is able to take at least one minute to pay a silent tribute. Certainly will. I have to say though that this year is the first time I can recall not buying a poppy, and that's only because I haven't seen any for sale, which is strange, they used to be everywhere. I've also noticed that not that many people are wearing them, which is a shame. I did put a donation in a "Help for Heroes" bucket in lieu of my lack of poppy though. (I'll "sticky" this thread to keep it on top for a few days by the way)

Plenty of poppies here in the North East, BD. Available in almost every shop and veterans and army cadets were out in force with them on Northumberland Street, the main shopping street in Newcastle, all week. Seems to be a North-South divide here ... or maybe liberals and socialists have better memories. :wink: Spartacus

It was sad to see that in the town of Newark the council ordered the poppy stall to be moved from where it had stood for 50 years. It is now tucked away around a corner and many of the townsfolk had difficulty finding it, as it used to be the centre of a thriving market. The council said they had ordered the move on "health and safety" grounds. The British Legion said that the move has lost them approximately £700 per day in donations. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/nottinghamshire/7710471.stm I'll be at our local service this morning, to pay my usual respect.

Good to hear that Sparty. We usually have folks camped outside the supermarkets selling poppies but I haven't even seen those this year. Even our local bakers shop which usually has a tray of poppies and a collection tin on the counter doesn't have them this year. Perhaps it's some problem with the local organisers?

Jobsworths! I hope the people of Newark make it clear to their local councillors that the jobsworths they employ should be controlled by THEM, not the other way around! Disgraceful!

Newark, as I recollect, is a strongly Conservative council. Joking apart, that REALLY surprises me! I coudn't imagine the Conservative-leaning towns hereabouts, like Hexham and Berwick, ever downgrading the sale of Poppies. Perhaps we're the "Real" England after all! :wink: Spartacus

Town-centre management and planning issues are in the remit of District Councils. I wonder what the District's line actually was? Presumably, they didn't object or it would have been highlighted in the report. Spartacus

I don't think any of these things are the work of the elected councillors. It is the out-of-control official, whether in "'ealth and safetee", the housing department or whatever. The fault lies with the elected councillors, for not getting a grip, and with the electors, for not letting them know what they think about them. These jobsworths did not spring out of the ground; the councillors nodded through the creation of their posts.

Finally acquired a poppy this morning (in another bakers shop). Better late than never I suppose.
