Pupils stage walk-out over short skirt ban
More than 100 pupils walked out of their High School in protest at a proposed short skirt ban. The day-long demonstration by girls and some boys on the playing field at Upton-by-Chester school was planned on social networking site Facebook. It followed a discussion in the dining hall during which teachers listened to students' grievances. The pupils were asked to return to classes but instead headed off to stage the "peaceful protest" over plans to bring in trousers and a new £15 summer shirt. One said: "It was about not being able to wear short skirts and make-up. We wanted to put our views across. "When we were outside the teachers tried to put a fence round us but we got past it and some of the pupils started running round the school." Jane Holland, the head teacher, said pupils who failed to turn up at lessons will be disciplined. She said: "Despite repeated warnings, skirt lengths have got even more ridiculous. "Male staff who are walking up stairs behind some of the girls don't know where to look.
