Little Milliband seeking the poisoned chalise?
David Miliband positions himself for leadership David Miliband tomorrow dares Gordon Brown to sack him by setting out how Labour can still win the next election in what is being seen as the launch of his leadership bid. The Foreign Secretary fires the first salvo in a deliberate challenge to Mr Brown in a newspaper article. Although he insisted tonight that he did not believe Labour should indulge in “introspection”, Mr Miliband’s intervention will intensify the pressure on Mr Brown to stand down. Mr Miliband is planning a series of speeches setting out his vision for the party’s future, according to an MP close to him. In doing so, the Foreign Secretary effectively will be defying Mr Brown to sack him – a move that could hasten the Prime Minister’s own end. Mr Miliband is likely to claim that he is doing no more than setting out his personal vision for Labour’s future in tomorrow’s article for The Guardian, but its timing and content will ensure that it is interpreted as an assault on Mr Brown’s leadership. Labour whips are now urging Mr Brown to bring forward his planned reshuffle after reports that ten ministers are prepared to stand down to force him to quit. The momentum against Mr Brown picked up speed today as ministers complained that he failed to restore morale after the Glasgow East by-election defeat with a lacklustre speech to the party’s national policy forum. snip Harriet Harman, meanwhile, was at the centre of a row over claims that she was twice heard to say: “This is my time” as she watched footage of the Glasgow East by-election defeat. The remark, which Ms Harman disputes, is said to have been made in the television and games room of the Radcliffe Building at Warwick University last Friday. snip http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/politics/article4426131.ece If true, they'll soon be falling over each other to stab Gormless in the back.

Guardian Miliband intervenes: Labour needs to change and change now David Miliband, seen as a frontrunner to succeed Gordon Brown if he resigns, today intervenes in the debate about Labour's future saying "the times demand a radical new phase" from the government if it is beat the electoral odds and win a fourth term. In what can be read as an implicit criticism of the current leadership's political style, the foreign minister writes in the Guardian: "To get our message across we must be more humble about our shortcomings, but more compelling about our achievements." Arguing for a new, more mature relationship with the electorate, he says: "When people hear exaggerated claims either about failure or success, then they switch off." Like the justice secretary, Jack Straw, who has been touted as a possible successor at No 10, Miliband insists the party does not need "a summer of introspection", or a "debate that starts with personalities", saying it needs instead to find "a way to win the argument about our record, our vision for the future and how we achieve it". snip http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2008/jul/29/davidmiliband.gordonbrown

David Miliband refuses to rule out challenging Gordon Brown for Labour leadership As speculation mounted about his ambitions, the Foreign Secretary appeared relaxed and good-humoured at a press conference with his Italian counterpart, where he was repeatedly pressed to say whether he backed Mr Brown to remain as Prime Minister. He refused point blank on at least four occasions to rule out a leadership challenge, saying only that he still thought it was possible that Labour could win the next General Election under Mr Brown. Asked if he agreed with a loyalist who said that the party would be "mad" to replace Mr Brown, Mr Miliband paused at length, before smiling and saying: "The Labour Party never does mad things." snip http://tinyurl.com/5omsml

Miliband Takes Aim It appears the game is very definitely on. Team Brown is now fighting for survival in the only way it knows how - anonymous briefing. The Standard quotes "allies", presumably Damian McBride, saying that Miliband is being "disloyal" and "self-serving" and of lacking "judgment and maturity". It goes on "People at least thought he was a serious figure and a grown-up politician but by allowing his head to be turned by this leadership nonsense, he has revealed a surprising lack of judgment and maturity." It was of course about this time 2 years ago that a not at all disloyal or self-serving crowd of Brownies sent a letter to Mr Blair telling him to go.
