Irish PM summoned to explain his failure to his EU masters The head of the European Union's current presidency called on Ireland's Prime Minister Brian Cowen to explain his country's rejection of the Lisbon treaty on Friday, increasing the pressure on the already-beleaguered Taoiseach, or premier. EU heads of state and government are set to meet in Brussels on Thursday, and on that day "I will invite the Irish Prime Minister to explain the reasons for the rejection of the treaty by the Irish people," Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Jansa, whose country holds the bloc's rotating presidency, said in a statement.
"We will discuss the situation and look for ways to move forward," he said.

Actually they're very bright, and so realise that an Irish "no" vote is but a small and temporary obstacle. The only way to stop the "progress" of ever closer union is to leave the E.U. - the Irish didn't vote to do that.

Indeed.
What they do understand, and what we must understand, is that they are not ever going to give this up.
I agree with TJ. We need to leave the EU.
Ain't gonna happen though.

This EU crap scares me a little bit.
The most bothersome thing is that it has the shell of a world government, although it applies only to the Europeans at this time.
It legitimizes the idea that an individual country can give up some of it’s sovereignty for the common good of the people. I think that idea will be very damaging to freedom in the long run.
It goes beyond the traditional idea of military and trade alliances, which works for the most part.

We've seen it all before.
USSR - a forced Union of States.
Yogoslavia - same.
In each case the individual states retained their sense of nationalism, and once the union began to crack, war rose it's ugly head. Now each of those states is independent again but still suffering from the effects of the forced union.
I was surprised to find that a Euro issued in France is not accepted in Spain, and vice versa, despite the alleged single currency. Unofficial polls show that over 70% of Germans did not want the single currency. The peoples of each State are so opposed to recent moves that their governments, with the exception of Ireland, refuse to give them a vote.
A united Europe under one central government is doomed to failure. Nationalism will survive. The English will remain English. Italians will remain Italians. The majority will never be true citizens of the EU. If forced to be so, the people will eventually rebel.
Mankind never learns from history.

I agree with your post apart from the two parts above.
It scares me more than a little bit; and E.U. expansion is now focussing on Turkey where the large majority of the landmass (97%) and the population is in Asia. I've heard comments suggesting the inclusion of Canada and even parts of North Africa.
