Green views 'same as religious beliefs' - Judge
An environmentalist has won his battle to take his former employer to a tribunal on the grounds that he was dismissed for his green views, his solicitor said today. Tim Nicholson can now sue Grainger plc after an employment appeal judge ruled in his favour. Mr Nicholson, 42, from Oxford, has claimed his opinions were ignored by senior managers at Grainger plc, the UK's biggest residential landlord. His solicitor, Shah Qureshi, said: 'Essentially what the judgment says is that a belief in man-made climate change and the alleged resulting moral imperative is capable of being a philosophical belief and is therefore protected by the 2003 religion or belief regulations. 'The mere fact that a belief in climate change can also be a political view about science or the world does not detract from the fact that it can also be a deeply held philosophical belief. 'Otherwise, the end result would be that the more evidence there is to support your views, the less likely it would be for you to enjoy protection against discrimination. So... let me get this straight, if I declare that my 'religion' prevents me from (say) handling the dead fleash of my deity, the tree god (wood), I can sue my employer (the sawmill) for wrongful dismissal ? Mo

.. One has to ask where this sort of thing will end ? I left my last 'proper' job because my bosses were a bunch of tw**s... Now tell me why that isn't grounds for unreasonable psychological stress in the workplace ? Mo

Am studying final level accountancy studies for the ACCA qualification. Hard as you might expect, but also aggravating because the green lot have infiltrated it, so you get all this ever so subtle portrayal of businesses as leeches that provide no benefit to society as a whole, only problems which they then should have to compensate for through support of communities, charities etc. and have to be accountable to all and sundry no matter how remote. They call this "stakeholder theory". :(
