flame wars we all know about the hostility between some members of this board and SterlingTimes.
i have the same hostility, i've just deleted my account there and won't be returning. however, could we possibly avoid a flame war with the burgers of ST because they obviously don't have lives to pursue while we do.
i would point out that they are prowling around the site trying to match names and posting details to delete any dual members. they also appear to believe that 'freebritania' has some kind of copyright on it. www.freebritannia.org now appears as a link on their site but doesn't go anywhere.
ok, we've established that they are fairly petty as well as being laughably hypocritical, however we wish to pursue our chat in peace and to do that means leaving them alone.

I agree entirely.
There is plenty of room on the internet for all.
There's no need for any bad feelings or unpleasantness.

If that's the case then that's pretty sad.
Perhaps any ST members wishing to register here but remain members there should use alternative user names.
I don't see why there should be a conflict.
Also, I want to make it clear that, despite their displaying a logo with "Free Britannia" on it and linking to a site with a similar domain to ours, we are not associated with them in any way, and I for one do not share the views predominantly expressed on their forum.
I've moved this to "Announcements Feedback & Questions" by the way as I think that's where it should be really.

Re: flame wars - WTF? i would point out that they are prowling around the site trying to match names and posting details to delete any dual members.
I wish I had read this thread before I signed up! I saw the advert for this forum on the UK section of Free Republic and registered using my real name, (which I use on all the other internet forums I frequent). Didn't realise that the chaps at Sterling Times were throwing a wobbly about someone producing a rival Conservative political forum in the UK.
I would be surprised and disappointed in Stephen or quidnunc if they were to ban me from ST just for joining another UK Conservative forum. However, if they believe that such a clearly unfair action would be reasonable then I feel that it is better not to be associated with their forum.
they also appear to believe that 'freebritania' has some kind of copyright on it.
"Free Britannia" was a Conservative forum originally set up by Ivan (MadIvan on FR) and he later sold it to some American bloggers who ran it for a while until they closed it down because they weren't happy with how it was going. I would be surprised if they owned the copyright for that domain name rather than owning the original forum, but I will ask Ivan.

While I doubt that Stephen, himself would be so petty (I always found him to very reasonable) but I'm not so sure about the new people involved there.

I did check with the UK and US trademark registries and I couldn't find anything for "freebritannia" or "free britannia"

Flame Wars Right, I know this is a very old thread (last comment made in August). I'm new so I surfed around this forum to read various opinions on random subjects.
I am a Sterling Times "refugee". I'm still a member but rarely visit. The ST has turned into a sanitized, "Amen" forum.

Free Wales, I'm an American. I originally linked up with ST a few years ago as it was touted as the forum for the Anglosphere. Last time I checked, Americans are part of the Anglosphere. Type "Anglosphere" in google and see what you come up with.
This forum has nothing to do with the Anglosphere but I popped in just to see what all the fighting was about. I certainly have no desire to participate in a foreign forum regularly.
I joined ST way back when there were but a few dirty yanks posting (how dare they?) people bitched and moaned to Stephen, asking him why there were yanks about. I think he explained what the Anglosphere was.
Having said all that, I LOVED popping in on Sterling Times now and then to engage in a good old fashion debate/Flame War/Pontification. How dull life would be if we all agreed.
I have more thoughts on ST that I'll save till later. Their style moderating is just plain weird....sometimes I think someone kidnapped ST and it has been taken over by mechanical cybertrons. Oh yeah, I'm right wing and agree with their ideology. I enjoy engaging in a good discussion and reading the wisdom of other like minded people but I like arguing (debating) with bed wetting hippes, aging socialists and pissing off the anti-Americans! All in good sport and for a well rounded education.
Since I am American, I will make myself scare....we don't have dozens of "Holidays" like you "lay about" eurpeans. You put together a nice site!
p.s. I remember way back when at ST, when there were few yanks, a number of people use to moan when yanks occasionally posted like I did. Oddly, a large number of those people have joined this site. All the more challenge for me!
Take care and have a great New Year!

Welcome Attila.
Though we are a British board, that is not in an exclusive sense - we have American and Canadian contributors, all are welcome it's just I don't think that there's a desire to see this turn into a repeater station for the particular concerns of American neo-conservatives.
Though most of us are conservative, free and open debate is encouraged - and certainly not all conservatives agree on all issues, one of the many reasons that I am a conservative.
I hope that you also have a wonderful new year.

The moderators here have no truck with such prejudice, but we do not routinely ban anyone who puts forward a controversial viewpoint.
Since I am American, I will make myself scare...
Actually, Americans are very welcome here and we already have some US contributors, these include: Coloradan, Adam Selene, Gun Packing Yank and vickismom97. Myself and TJ are both long time members of Free Republic and we both enjoy corresponding with American conservatives.
What we object to at Sterling Times is the fact that the American neocon moderators will abuse and ban posters who dare to question US foreign or internal policies and seek to impose US values on Britain.
p.s. I remember way back when at ST, when there were few yanks, a number of people use to moan when yanks occasionally posted like I did. Oddly, a large number of those people have joined this site.
I smell a troll. I suspect you are quid or Aerostar employing this crude method to defame this forum. If you aren't then my apologies, but one of them has made attempts at this here recently.

Attila. Please note that this forum is definietely not an anti-American forum. (I'm not sure that you got that impression but your post above does seem to suggest that in some way)
We started it because of what happened to ST, which, as you know, used to be fun and thriving with plenty of discussion and an range if views (All be it with a conservative slant).
What happened there was that a certain individual ("quid' ", who happens to be American), was made moderator and entirely changed the feel of the place, no views different from his own were allowed and he removed posts and threatened to ban members simply for questioning his views and actions. Eventually many of the old members pro-*test*-('")ed long and loud (some just left) and quid decamped to Free Republic where for some months ran a vendetta of anti-British posts, full of bile and resentment (he even admitted it here
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1339946/replies?c=57 )
ST, in the meantime, settled down to something resembling it's former self (although some of the departed members did not return).
Then, after the London bombings of last July, quid' returned to ST and started to post a large number of posts relating to Islamic terrorism, how the British were on the verge of Dhimmitude, etc, etc.
His renewed presence and the content of his postings triggered more members to pro-*test*-('") and to leave. I was one of them and set up this forum as a result.
Thus many members here are ex-ST and hold a certain amount of resentment against, not Americans in general, but the authoritarian mindset of this particular individual (since joined by another).
Blimey, going on a bit aren't I!
Anyway, what I mean to say is that we are not exclusively British nor conservative. We probably have more members from the right than the left at present but we aren't trying to advance any particular agenda.
We just want a forum where anyone can discuss whatever without worrying about being moderated out of existance if what they say is deemed off-message.
As a matter of interest, what was your name on ST?
Bestbear- 01-05-2006
Hunny....
I don't know that the British posters on ST, and on the former Free Britannia before that, were ever anything but welcoming to The Cousins. I know I was not. The English in general are unusually pro-USA for europeans, and the posters, as I recall, were unusually pro-USA for British people!
But we always felt free to take issue with US policies where we disagreed with them.
So, be assured that all-comers are welcome here, especially the Cousins, as long as it is not their mission to denigrate Great Britain and her institutions to the exclusion of all else! (And that does not mean that we can't take criticism where it is reasoned and just!)
I fell victim to the crude moderation of Aerostasi, and I still have no idea why that was. But I was hounded as the "tame liberal" ... a notion which would reduce Spartacus and others here to spasms of helpless laughter!
So ... please stay and contribute. You will be more than welcome.
