Surely attacking someone is illegal, whatever their weight... Physically attacking them is, sure. It's called assault. But now, the law says that an assault is a worse offence if the motivation for the attack is a "hate crime" "Hate crime" is defined in English law as crimes "motivated by the victims race, colour, ethnic origin, nationality or national origins, religion, gender or gender identity, sexual orientation or disability" What we have here is a move to add fat people to that list. But why stop there? Why not include people with ginger or blonde hair (all those blonde jokes will be outlawed), or people from Essex (a persecuted group if there ever was one), or what about bald people or ones with beards or moustaches?

I have every sympathy with fat people who have genuine glandular problems. Millions don't however. They are lazy and eat far too much. When they finally acquire some self-discipline and go on a diet (those who do) they are given bravery badges on those gaudy TV shows where every human being is a fab person and deserves a big hug. Why do these people always win and when the hell are we going to stop being so painfully nice to everyone with a hard luck story? Things would improve dramatically if pandering clothes stores revised their size ranges along the lines of Small, Medium, Large, Fat, Very Fat, Oscene Great Sweaty Whopper, Orca and the premium Blue Whale collection. I tell you, I'm miles ahead of those marketing wimps....

What really should be included as a hate crime is attacking someone because of the sub-culture they belong too. i.e. Goth, Emo, Chav The killing of Sophie Lancaster should have been classified as a hate crime.

Clarkey, I don't know what you will think of this? In my humble opinion crime is crime. Assault is assault. Theft is theft. &co. There were laws enough to deal with any crime without introducing this nonsense about "hate crimes" which is supposed to make it worse. There should be no such thing in law as a "hate crime". Crime is crime. "Hate crime" is just one step away from "thought crime". And not a long step, either! What do you think?

I don't necessarily disagree by the way, but I wonder if the reason why we feel that way is because we've been affected by the propaganda?

It seems worse to me because attacking someone because they're different is something that packs of animals in the wild would do... Reflexively attacking someone because you don't identify with them seems, somehow, like travelling back on the evolutionary chain

Look at tribalism in Africa. They are all the same colour but they still hate and sometimes kill each other because they consider "the other lot" to be different. Look at football supporters, they are (by & large) mainly white, but they still howl insults at the other lot and occasionally bash each other up, simply because "the other lot" support a different team. Look at religious conflicts. Say no more squire. Look at politics. "I 'ate phucking Tories I do!" I suppose it's just how we are. Don't suppose it'll ever change.

Whoops! Should have put shouldn't there. It just strike me as worse if there's no other reason to commit a crime other than some instinct that shouldn't apply to modern day life. It seems that not even self-defence is acceptable these days. A man in our area used a small amount of force to eject a youth that had just attacked him physically and verbally. He'd called the police several times in the past month to complain, yet when they finally did come it was to arrest him for assault. They fully intend to charge him too.
