The French President has awarded Britain's Olympic gold medals to the European Union in order to claim victory for Europe in the Beijing Games. Nicolas Sarkozy has lumped together all of the 87 gold medals won by EU countries at the Beijing Games to declare a triumph for Europe over China and the United States. The President, who currently holds the EU's six monthly rotating presidency, paid tribute on Sunday night to French athletes before going on to credit Europe for taking the most gold medals, of which the lion's share were won by British sportsmen and women. "The European Union takes the leading position. It's a victory for sport and for the fundamental and common values of the peoples of the union," he said. "The President of the Council of the EU salutes the exploit of each athlete who contributed to hoisting the colours of Europe high." Team GB, coming fourth in the Olympic rankings behind only China, the US and Russia, won more gold medals than any other EU nation, accounting for 19, or 22 per cent, of the European total. Germany won 16 gold medals and France seven, despite both countries having larger populations than Britain.
