Brown and Straw making it up as they go along
They are getting increasingly desperate. Brown: Fending off continuing calls to quit from within his own ranks at party conference, Brown promised action on City bonuses, saying: "I think there is an element of the bonus system that is unacceptable," and questioning rewards for short-term deals with no regard to long-term performance. Straw: "I am concerned about 'no win no fee' arrangements," Straw said. "It's claimed they have provided greater access to justice but the behaviour of some lawyers in ramping up their fees in these cases is nothing short of scandalous. "So I am going to address this and consider whether to cap more tightly the level of success fees that lawyers can charge." Brown, again: Gordon Brown's promise to extend state-funded nursery care to two-year-olds came under fire after the Government failed to explain how the plan would be implemented or funded. <...> Charities and Labour activists lauded the promise, but the lack of detail about Mr Brown's plans led to claims that the policy is unfunded and unlikely to be realised for several years, if at all. <...> The Department for Children, Schools and Families was unable to provide any details about the expansion of the scheme such as when it would begin, how much it would cost and how much it would cost. A DCSF spokeswoman said the announcement was a matter for the Labour Party. Here are a couple of predictions: there will be no "crackdown" on City bonuses, and there will be no "crackdown" on no-win, no-fee lawyers. These people are quite simply making it up as they go along. And note the careful language used by Straw - a lawyer, after all. He signals to his party that he is going to do something about these problems, but what he actually promises is merely that he will "consider" and "address" these problems. This is whatever the leftie equivalent of throwing red meat to the base is called: precisely meaningless. Polly will no doubt swallow it hook, line and sinker. I would add a third prediction - that there will be no universal state nursery care for 2 year-olds, despite what Gordo says - but by 2018 no one will remember that this "policy" ever even existed, let alone that a long-forgotten blogger once predicted that it was all so much bullshit... http://mreugenides.blogspot.com/
