Bears back from the Smoke ... We had a good trip to the Capital. We stayed at a hotel in Ilford, where we could park the car, and intended to catch the Central Line into London as required. This was a very successful idea - at least for Saturday evening, when we went to Covent Garden to see the stalls and enjoy all the street theatre.
Ancient Rome must have been a bit like this, heaving with people, with performers of all kinds hoping to make a living from donations - although I suspect that the Ancient Romans were also adept at vanishing when the hat came around!
Sunday we needed to get to Picadilly to meet our US-based son, which was the real object of the journey. He is in Europe to speak at a series of conferences. But sadly the Central Line was shut down for repairs, so we had to trundle along in the No 25 horrid bouncy-bendy-bus. This talking bus told us it was going to Oxford Circus as advertised, but it changed its mind en route and went to Holborn instead. We didn't know buses could DO this!
Incredibly crowded and hot, this bus! And because of the dress code in our club I had to be in suit and tie, so sweltered. The bus was full of folk of obviously foreign extraction, the most noticeable group being the Muslims because of their fancy dress. Half the passengers spent the entire interminable journey shouting in tongues into mobile phones. One chap - who looked like an Easter Islander - had two, one for each hand. I half expected him to ring himself up if no one else did!
We wondered where all the English people had got to. Were they perhaps in cars? But no ... The cars were also full of obvious foreigners.
We could see what Nicky meant about the Capital having been "ethnically cleansed" - an extravagant way of posing the same question we asked: Where are all the Londoners?
Maybe Dog can tell us. But it did seem as if we have surrendered the Capital to an invading horde. We must be collectively insane to have allowed this to happen .....
Mind you, people in general were courteous, pleasant and helpful, which is not how we remember the English people who once lived in London! The Poles and other immigrants who operated our hotel gave excellent and unobtrusive service, where their native predecessors used to be famous the world over for their "attitude". Their first priority was to make it clear that while they might be forced to serve, they were more than the equal of any damned customer!
On Monday we drove over the river to visit the wonderful Eltham Palace and admire the Courtauld's Art Deco interiors. That made it worth taking the car.
And so back to the uncrowded, pleasant North, where England still seems to be England - at least for the time being.

Yes I enjoyed it.
We stayed in Ashbourne in Derbyshire, had a peak at the Peaks while we were there.
Lovely country.
Natives generally friendly and helpful.

Ashbourne is very nice. I once lived in those parts. But it is hardly "oop north"! Is it, Sparty?
But tell me, Dog ... What happened to all the Londoners who should have been on that 25 bendy-shaky-rattley-bus we travelled on. Where did they all go?

It's North enough for me!

Well, mostly, they moved to Essex.
You're not wrong though, London is a total racial/cultural mish-mash now.
Walking around the Natural History Museum a few months ago I was struck by the variety of languages I could hear being spoken. Everything except English it seemed (honestly!)
And those stat's about more than half of kids in London primary schools not having English as a first language are probably correct. My sister-out-law is a primary teacher in Newham and reports that 90% do not speak English as a first language. Quite remarkable.

We must be mad!
But ... as I said .... they all seemed nice enough people .....
But what are they all doing HERE? I suppose it is true. New Liebore decided to have open doors in order to thrust multiculturalism down our right-wing throats.
I hope they will be sorry, very soon!

"Where are all the Londoners? "
Hmmm..... I lived in London for 19 years, and one of the great things about London is that 'Londoner' encompasses so many different cultures.
I'm not orignally from London, but I consider myself a 'Londoner' even now.

More thought on this...
London has ALWAYS been different from the rest of Britain, that's why it's so much more interesting...
Just one example - talk a walk down Brick Lane, and you will think that maybe you are in Begal...
But... take a close look at some of the buildings, and you will see evidence of the large Jewish community which was once found in these streets (now moved on to more upmarket places like Golder's Green, Stamford Hill)...
But...take an even closer look at some of the buildings, and you will see evidence of the Hugenot population that settled here, and brought lace making and other trades here too.
London is in a constant state of change, it was ever thus Bestbear, and it will contue to be thus.

Not been back for a while have you?
Brick Lane has expanded somewhat.

I just checked, and it still runs from Whitechapel to the Bethnal Green Rd. Bulldog.

I was recently in Ashbourne! We were travelling back from a funeral in Cheshire. We stayed in the "Black's Head and Green Man Hotel".... very old but comfortable, and great ale....!

Didn't see that one. Looks nice.
We stayed in a modern-ish hotel, the Miraj or somesuch it's called. It was ok, nothing special, the breakfasts were good though.

That's a nice place to stay, Lindsay! Does it still have the sign over the road? I suppose you could never have such an un-PC name on a new hotel!

Yes the sign is still over the road, the place is really only referred to now as the Green Man. In an adjoining building there is the Leatherbritches Brewery; we were drinking one of their brews which was called "Hairy Helmet".
I know of one other pub called The Black's Head, it's in Bletchingdon which is a little village just off the main road to Oxford, south of Bicester. I used to go there every Thursday for a folk/jam session throughout the 80s.
